Air Tanzania is the national flag carrier of Tanzania based in Dar es Salaam, at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). The airline operates scheduled passenger services to the main destinations in Tanzania including Julius Nyerere – Dar Es Salaam International Airport (DAR) and Kigoma Airport (TKQ).
The airline was established in March 1977 to operate the services suspended following the break up of East African Airways, which was jointly owned by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. Air Tanzania relaunched in 2007, after its five-year partnership with giant South African Airways was dissolved. In 2016, the Tanzanian government announced that it would be investing in reviving the national carrier, and bought a number of new aircraft, including a Bombardier Q400.
In the summer months of 2019, the airline started new routes to Johannesburg, South Africa and Mumbai, India. These routes are fully operated by the airline’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and the Airbus A220-300.
Today, the airline operates an extensive network with Tanzania, connecting major cities and cultural hubs. Air Tanzania has codeshares with Air Uganda and Air Zimbabwe.

This follows the suspension of international flights due to COVID-19 restrictions earlier in the year. Flights will be operated with new safety measures in place.
